6 Signs Bots Are Inflating Your Website Traffic (and How to Verify)
One morning you open Google Analytics and see visits doubled overnight. The joy lasts a few seconds — then you notice revenue is flat and the cart is still empty. This is the classic sign that bots, not humans, are inflating your numbers.
After years of staring at traffic data, I've settled on a list of tells that reliably separate real visitors from junk. No single sign is proof on its own, but when three or four show up together, something is almost certainly wrong.
1. Bounce rate near 100% or near 0%
Real people rarely bounce at exactly 100%. Simple bots load one page and vanish (~100% bounce); sophisticated bots fake navigation and push bounce down to an implausible level. Both extremes are suspicious.
2. Zero-second time on page
Sessions with a duration of exactly 0 seconds are usually automated scripts — nobody is actually reading.
3. Traffic peaking at odd hours
Your customers are local, but traffic peaks at 3 a.m.? Bots run on cron schedules; they don't sleep on human time.
4. Many hits from one IP range
Dozens of sessions from IPs that differ only in the last few digits point to a server or botnet, not naturally distributed visitors.
5. Spikes from countries you don't target
A local shop suddenly getting thousands of hits from a distant country is usually automated — unless you just went viral.
6. Direct hits to deep URLs
Real people arrive via the homepage, Google or social. Bots often jump straight to deep URLs with no intermediate step.
Verify it in 5 minutes
Don't just guess. Take your most suspicious IPs and check whether they're VPNs, proxies or datacenter addresses — real visitors almost always come from residential ISPs.
Check now: Look up whether an IP is a VPN/Proxy/Datacenter. To score every click automatically, start with a free audit.
Straight talk
Pretty numbers that don't turn into money are meaningless. Your first move isn't to grow traffic — it's to learn how much of your current traffic is real.
